China intellectuals call for activist’s release
Writers and intellectuals in China are calling upon Beijing to release Liu Xiaobo, a civil rights activist who was detained after writing a document calling for civil and political reforms.
Liu was one of 300 people to sign the "Charter '08" petition, which called for a new constitution, free elections, freedom of speech and an end to the Communist Party's one-party rule, but was the only one to be arrested. After six months in detention, he was charged this week with inciting to subvert state power and could face up to 15 years in jail.
International figures such as author Salman Rushdie and US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have also written President Hu Jintao to ask for Liu's release.
